How to Reach San Juan Island From Seattle
Plan the Seattle–San Juan Island trip via Anacortes: compare drive-on, walk-on and shuttle options, ferry timing, reservations, and 2026 fares.

There is no direct scheduled ferry from Seattle to San Juan Island in 2026. The practical route is to travel from Seattle to the Anacortes ferry terminal, then take a Washington State Ferry to Friday Harbor. The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission authorized the San Juan Clipper to discontinue Seattle–Friday Harbor service from May 11, 2026, through May 10, 2027. The operator must report by March 31, 2027, on whether it will resume service, but the order does not promise a May return (UTC Order 01).
Choose what you want to do on the island and whether you can drive to Anacortes; the route finder will identify the best fit.
Seattle–San Juan Route Finder
The default assumes you can drive to Anacortes but plan to stay around Friday Harbor.
Best fit: Park and walk on
Drive to Anacortes, use paid terminal parking and walk aboard. Friday Harbor begins immediately above the landing.
Allow about 30 minutes at the terminal.
Park and Walk On
Best when Friday Harbor is the focus and you can drive to Anacortes.
- No passenger-space reservation
- Paid terminal parking
- Arrange transport for farther island stops
Drive Aboard
Best for Lime Kiln Point, Roche Harbor, American Camp or multiple island stops.
- Reserve vehicle space both ways
- Check in at least 30 minutes before sailing
- The reservation does not include the fare
Shuttle and Walk On
Best for a car-free overnight based around Friday Harbor.
- Bellair serves the terminal from Sea-Tac
- Reserve at least 24 hours ahead to guarantee pickup
- Ferry and shuttle connections are not protected
Sources: WSF fare and rider information and Bellair’s schedule, as listed in the article. Fare snapshot: September 30, 2026; parking and shuttle costs are not supplied.
Do not start at Seattle’s Colman Dock. Its state ferries serve Bainbridge Island and Bremerton, not the San Juan Islands.
Choose How to Reach Anacortes
| Plan | Best For | Main Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Drive onto the ferry | Exploring beyond Friday Harbor | Reserve vehicle space both ways |
| Park and walk on | Staying around Friday Harbor | Arrange the Seattle–Anacortes leg |
| Bellair shuttle and walk on | A car-free overnight | Shuttle and ferry times are separate |
Drive Onto the Ferry for More Island Access
A car is useful for reaching places outside Friday Harbor, including Lime Kiln Point, Roche Harbor and American Camp. Budget roughly two to three hours from Seattle to the terminal, including a traffic allowance, and aim to arrive 45–60 minutes before departure.
Vehicle reservation holders must check in at least 30 minutes before sailing or lose the reservation and travel standby (Visit San Juans ferry guidance).
Reserve both the westbound Anacortes–Friday Harbor sailing and the eastbound return. A reservation holds vehicle space, but it is not the fare. Buying a ferry ticket by itself does not guarantee room on a particular sailing (WSF ticket guidance).
Vehicle space is the main constraint. Choose the return sailing before finalizing the outbound trip so you know how much usable time you will have on San Juan Island.
Park at Anacortes and Walk On for Friday Harbor
Walking on avoids the vehicle-reservation step. It works particularly well when Friday Harbor is the focus of the trip: the town is immediately above the landing, with shops and restaurants within walking distance.
Arrange island transportation before departure if you want to visit places farther from town. Seasonal buses and trolleys may operate, and bike, moped and car rentals can provide other options, but availability should not be assumed for a tightly timed visit.
Walk-on passengers do not reserve space. WSF requires them to be aboard at least five minutes before departure. Arriving about 30 minutes early allows time to park, buy or scan a ticket and queue (WSF first-time rider guide).
Paid parking is available at the Anacortes terminal. Prices vary by season and length of stay, so check the official terminal parking page for your dates. The draft fare information does not provide a single parking price that applies year-round.
Use Bellair for a Car-Free Overnight
Bellair Airporter serves the Anacortes ferry terminal from Sea-Tac Airport. As of September 30, 2026, Seattle Convention Center pickup is available only on three northbound trips because of Ship Canal Bridge construction; the posted schedule does not show a southbound Convention Center stop. Bellair requires reservations at least 24 hours ahead to guarantee a pickup (current Bellair schedule).
Bellair and WSF operate separate schedules. A late ferry will not make the shuttle wait. Check the connection in both directions before paying and leave a generous buffer between the ferry and shuttle.
This option is more workable for an overnight stay than for a tightly timed day trip. It also suits travelers staying near Friday Harbor better than visitors trying to cover the island without arranging local transportation.
Allow Four to Six Hours Before Island Time
Crossing time depends on whether the ferry travels directly to Friday Harbor or calls at other islands. On the fall 2026 schedule, for example, the 8:40 a.m. departure from Anacortes reaches Friday Harbor at 9:50 a.m. Other sailings take longer. Schedules change seasonally, so search your date on the official Anacortes–San Juan Islands timetable.
From a Seattle hotel, plan on:
- About two to three hours to reach Anacortes with a traffic allowance
- 45–60 minutes at the terminal with a vehicle, or about 30 minutes to park and walk on
- Roughly one to two hours aboard, depending on the sailing
Those segments put the typical planning range at roughly four to six hours from leaving Seattle to arriving in Friday Harbor. That is not a guaranteed journey time: I-5 traffic, terminal queues and indirect sailings can extend it.
A same-day visit is possible, but the drives, waits and return sailing leave less island time than the map suggests. For a shorter ferry outing, Bainbridge is the easier downtown departure. San Juan Island generally fits better as an overnight, as this comparison of Seattle-area islands explains.
September 2026 Fares Are Collected in Anacortes
For Anacortes to Friday Harbor, WSF listed these fares on September 30, 2026:
| Traveler or Vehicle | Listed Fare |
|---|---|
| Adult walk-on, age 19–64 | $18 |
| Youth passenger, age 18 or younger | Free |
| Vehicle under 22 feet with driver | $86.25 |
WSF collects the passenger and vehicle fares in Anacortes and does not collect a return fare at Friday Harbor. Other adult passengers in a vehicle are charged the passenger fare (WSF fare table).
Prices vary by travel date and vehicle dimensions. WSF also adds a 3% surcharge to credit- and debit-card transactions; that charge began March 1, 2026 (WSF fare information). Recheck the official fare calculator for your travel date and vehicle size.
The figures above do not include fuel, Anacortes parking, Bellair tickets, island transportation or lodging. No single total trip price can be calculated from the supplied fare data because those costs vary or were not provided.
Book the Return Sailing Before the Outbound Trip
First decide whether Friday Harbor alone is enough. If it is, parking at Anacortes and walking aboard avoids vehicle reservations. If you want Lime Kiln Point, Roche Harbor, American Camp or several stops around the island, taking a vehicle gives you more control.
Choose the return ferry next because it determines your usable island time. Drivers should then reserve vehicle space in both directions. Walk-on passengers do not need a ferry-space reservation, but they still need enough time to park and board.
If using Bellair, compare its exact departure times with both ferry sailings before paying. A workable outbound connection does not establish that the return connection will work, particularly because the posted Convention Center service is limited.
Check WSF service alerts the evening before the trip and again before leaving Seattle. Keep the final Seattle evening flexible in case marine service or I-5 traffic runs late.
Bring a warm, water-resistant layer even when Seattle feels mild. The exposed Anacortes terminal and ferry deck can feel cooler; this Seattle rain and ferry clothing guide covers useful layers.
