December in Seattle: 7 Outings with Holiday Lights and Rain Plans

Plan December in Seattle with 2026 holiday events, Pike Place Market, indoor stops and a timetable-aware Bainbridge ferry outing.

Mina Chen

For a first December visit, start with Pike Place Market and the waterfront, then give Seattle Center its own afternoon and evening for holiday activities. Add either WildLanterns or a Christmas Ship outing—not both on an already crowded day. Keep a museum option for weather that makes outdoor wandering unappealing.

2026 event dates and visitor information checked October 1, 2026. Check the linked operators before booking.

1. Browse Pike Place Market, then choose your waterfront stop

Make this your daytime shopping-and-food outing: browse crafts and shops, have lunch, then decide whether to continue outside or visit the Seattle Aquarium.

Most of the Market is active 10 a.m.–5 p.m., although individual businesses set their own hours. The crafts market generally runs 11 a.m.–4 p.m., making late morning a useful starting point. The Market is closed on Christmas Day. Use the Market’s visitor guide and directory to pick a few businesses rather than trying to cover every level.

The Aquarium is a nearby weather-ready anchor, but not a completely indoor one. Admission includes Pier 59, Pier 60 and the Ocean Pavilion; the operator notes that the visit includes indoor and outdoor spaces. Reserve an entry time if it is your main activity, especially if you want to avoid a walk-up queue in the rain. Seattle Aquarium visit information

Rain adjustment: shorten the waterfront walk, not lunch or your booked Aquarium visit. Our downtown Seattle routes help keep these stops together.

2. Spend an afternoon at Seattle Center Winterfest

Winterfest runs November 27–December 31, 2026. Its useful December mix is the Winter Train & Village inside the Armory, weekend entertainment and campus lights after dark. The train operates 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily during the festival, with donations accepted. Seattle Center also lists free Friday holiday films at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday ice sculpting at noon. If you’re visiting December 31, its free New Year’s Eve celebration includes Armory entertainment from 8 p.m. to midnight and an outdoor view of the Space Needle celebration. Official Winterfest program

Treat the Seattle Christmas Market as a separate, ticketed choice, not something automatically included with Winterfest. It runs November 20–December 27, 2026 at Seattle Center. Early-season weekdays through December 13 open at 4 p.m., while opening hours expand later in the month. It is closed December 25. Christmas Market dates, hours and tickets

Best fit: visitors who want several holiday options without another cross-city transfer. Browse the outdoor market if conditions suit; use the Armory for a warmer break.

3. Book The Nutcracker as your indoor holiday anchor

Pacific Northwest Ballet’s George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker runs November 27–December 27, 2026. The performance lasts 2 hours and 3 minutes, including a 25-minute intermission—useful when deciding whether it suits younger children or an evening dinner plan. PNB’s production details and tickets

Performances are at McCaw Hall on the north edge of Seattle Center. Pair a matinee with campus lights afterward, or keep an evening performance’s earlier activities light. PNB identifies the Monorail between Westlake Center and Seattle Center as a convenient downtown connection; allow additional time to walk across campus and enter the hall. PNB arrival information

Rain adjustment: this is the stronger choice when you want a holiday experience without spending the evening outdoors.

4. Make WildLanterns your main evening outing

Woodland Park Zoo’s WildLanterns runs November 13, 2026–January 17, 2027, 4–9 p.m., with last entry at 8:30 p.m. December closure dates are December 7, 14, 24 and 25. December 18 is a 21+ Night Owls evening, so families should choose another date. Official WildLanterns calendar

This is an after-hours lantern event with separate admission, not an extension of a daytime zoo ticket. The zoo recommends allowing at least two hours, so choose an entry time no later than 7 p.m. if you want that full window. It runs rain or shine, and tickets are non-refundable, though unredeemed tickets can be rescheduled subject to availability and pricing conditions. Dress for an outdoor walk. WildLanterns visitor guidance

Planning choice: give it its own north-Seattle evening rather than adding it after a Seattle Center show. Eat beforehand and leave time for the trip to the zoo.

5. Hear the Christmas Ship choir—from a boat or the shore

Argosy’s Christmas Ship Festival offers a 1.5-hour cruise with an onboard community choir, plus a shore-based alternative: public gatherings where you can hear the ship’s 20-minute broadcast performance. Departure docks and shore stops vary, so choose the location as carefully as the sailing time.

For 2026, special dates include the Parade of Boats on December 11 and Grand Finale on December 23. The parade’s official onshore viewing party is at Evanston Plaza by the Fremont Cut—not the downtown waterfront. Argosy’s festival details and schedule

Best fit: visitors who particularly want holiday music on the water. For shore viewing, check the exact stop and performance time before heading out; this is not an all-evening display at one fixed location.

6. Use the Frye Art Museum for a quieter rainy day

On First Hill, the Frye Art Museum has free admission. Its regular hours are Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., with Thursday opening until 8 p.m. It closes at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Frye hours and arrival information

Build a modest outing around the galleries and a meal rather than treating this as a last-minute detour from the waterfront. The museum notes that the walk from Pioneer Square light rail station involves a steep incline; a bus connection may suit you better in wet weather.

7. Take a Bainbridge ferry outing if the timetable fits

Choose Bainbridge for a half-day outing, not a quick boat ride squeezed between timed attractions. Washington State Ferries lists the Seattle–Bainbridge crossing at approximately 35 minutes each way. The published fall timetable covers September 20–December 26, 2026, and Christmas Day uses the holiday/weekend schedule. For December 27 onward, check the timetable for your actual date. Official route schedule

Walk on and keep the island portion focused on Winslow Way’s shops, cafés and galleries, rather than attempting distant attractions. The Seattle Southside Bainbridge guide has ideas for this compact downtown outing.

Pick an outbound sailing, a target return and a later fallback before leaving. Arrive with time to buy tickets and board: WSF says walk-on passengers should be aboard at least five minutes before departure, which is not a terminal-arrival target. Ferries have both indoor and outdoor seating. WSF first-time rider guidance

Use our three-part ferry-day plan for the arrival, island stop and return buffer. Avoid pairing the ferry with a tightly timed evening show.

A manageable two-day December plan

  • Day one: late-morning Pike Place browsing, lunch, then the Aquarium or a short waterfront walk. Leave the evening flexible.
  • Day two: Seattle Center’s train display and a meal, followed by one main choice: the Christmas Market or a Nutcracker performance.
  • If you have another day: choose Bainbridge in daylight or WildLanterns in the evening. Use the Frye instead when you want a fully indoor activity, on a day it is open.

Protect your daylight: Seattle’s December 2026 sunsets fall between roughly 4:17 and 4:27 p.m. Schedule scenic walks before your late-afternoon indoor stop, and save lanterns and holiday lights for afterward. December sunrise and sunset times

Pack a hooded waterproof layer, warm midlayer and shoes that handle wet pavement. For more packing detail, see our Seattle winter guide. If your trip includes December 25, confirm meals and activities individually—the Market, Christmas Market, WildLanterns and Frye are all closed that day.
