South Lake Union Seattle: A Car-Free Half-Day Guide
Plan a South Lake Union half-day around MOHAI, wooden boats and Lake Union Park, with car-free directions, meal timing and a workable rain backup.

For a first visit, build South Lake Union around MOHAI and a short Lake Union Park walk. Add the Center for Wooden Boats when it is open, and fit a meal around the opening hours rather than trying to circle the lake. Allow roughly three to four hours for this suggested outing; the museum should take the largest share.
South Lake Union combines a tech-and-research district with maritime history and lake access. Its most useful visitor cluster is at the south end of Lake Union, where the park contains both MOHAI and the Center for Wooden Boats. This is a lake outing, distinct from Seattle’s downtown saltwater waterfront. See Visit Seattle’s neighborhood guide and Seattle Parks’ Lake Union Park page for orientation.
Choose your anchor—and check the day
Hours and prices below checked October 10, 2026.
| Your priority | Best anchor | Planning catch |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle history or a substantial indoor visit | MOHAI, 860 Terry Ave N | Open Monday and Thursday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Adult admission is $25. |
| A free maritime stop | Center for Wooden Boats, 1010 Valley St | Regularly open Wednesday–Sunday, with seasonal hours and special closures. Admission is free. |
| A short outdoor break | Lake Union Park | Keep this flexible around the weather rather than treating it as an all-day attraction. |
MOHAI’s schedule is particularly important: do not make it your Tuesday or Wednesday rain backup. Youth 14 and under enter free and must be accompanied by an adult. Check the official MOHAI visit page for holiday and special closures.
The Center for Wooden Boats lists an October 12–20, 2026 closure, with no museum access or rentals. From October 21, its published winter museum hours are Wednesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; boat rentals resume March 20, 2027. On a Monday, plan on MOHAI and the park rather than CWB. Use its seasonal hours page when choosing your date.
A manageable half-day route
1. Start with breakfast if you want a sit-down meal
Portage Bay Cafe’s South Lake Union location is at 391 Terry Ave N, giving you a meal stop before heading north toward the park. It serves breakfast, brunch and lunch, with reservations available. Its current closing time is 1:30 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays—so breakfast first is easier than counting on a late lunch after the museum. Location, hours and reservations.
If food is not the priority, go straight to the park and leave your meal flexible.
2. Give MOHAI the main block of time
Budget about two hours as a starting point, extending that if Seattle history is your main interest. MOHAI collects and interprets the region’s artifacts and stories, making it a useful anchor rather than merely somewhere to escape rain. Walk-up admission is available, and tickets permit same-day re-entry with your receipt. MOHAI visitor information.
For ticketing, accessibility and a more museum-focused route, see our MOHAI South Lake Union visit guide.
3. Walk the park, then browse the wooden boats
After the museum, take a short waterfront walk within Lake Union Park. The point is to enjoy the water and maritime setting without committing to a long loop.
When the Center for Wooden Boats is open, visit the Wagner Education Center and public docks. Both are free to explore during regular business hours; parts of the docks can close for youth programs. CWB hours and location and visitor FAQ.
Treat boating as a separate, seasonal option—not a guaranteed extra. During rental season, CWB’s free one-hour peapod rowboat program is walk-up, first-come, first-served, with availability not guaranteed. Its published 2026 Public Sail dates ended September 27; do not assume a sail will be running on your visit. Check the official free-programs page alongside the seasonal hours, or use our Center for Wooden Boats visit guide for program and rental details.
Make the rain plan fit the opening hours
On a MOHAI opening day: visit the museum first, then shorten the park and dock portions if rain persists. MOHAI also lists a lakeside café and allows visitors to eat their own food in its first-floor Microsoft Lakefront Pavilion, though food and drink are prohibited in galleries. Museum food policies.
On Tuesday or Wednesday: choose a different indoor anchor before setting out. Flatstick Pub at 609 Westlake Ave N offers nine-hole indoor mini golf, pizza and other food. It currently opens at 11 a.m. daily, with mini golf priced at $12 per person and tee times bookable up to seven days ahead. This makes a practical games-and-meal outing when MOHAI is closed. Flatstick’s South Lake Union details. With children, keep this a daytime stop outside designated bar seating areas; check directly before planning an evening visit, as its FAQ and booking page list different evening age cutoffs.
The nearby Amazon Spheres are not a walk-in rain fallback. Public interior visits require a confirmed reservation and generally take place on the first and third Saturdays of the month. Add them only if your date and reservation work. Official Spheres visitor rules.
Get there without a car
From the downtown Westlake area, the South Lake Union Streetcar connects Westlake Hub at McGraw Square with Lake Union Park. Northbound neighborhood stops use Terry Avenue; southbound stops use Westlake Avenue, so check the direction before waiting. The published schedule is every 12–15 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends and holidays. There is no service on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. Check the official route and hours before your trip.
The current standard adult fare is $3; riders 18 and under travel free. From Westlake Hub, pay before boarding using an accepted method such as ORCA or contactless Tap to Pay at the platform reader. Streetcar fares and payment.
For step-free planning, the streetcar has wheelchair ramps, and MOHAI identifies its west-side entrance as fully ADA accessible. CWB advises calling ahead about mobility concerns because docks and boats can be difficult to navigate. Streetcar accessibility, MOHAI access and CWB guidance.
If considering a hotel here, compare its exact location with your daily priorities. Favor park access for this lake-and-museum outing; favor access toward Westlake if downtown connections matter more. A car is unnecessary for this neighborhood plan, and the closest general parking to MOHAI is paid—the lot immediately beside the museum is reserved for ADA parking and drop-off. MOHAI parking details.
