Rainy Seattle: What to Expect and How to Plan Your Day

Plan for rainy Seattle with seasonal weather facts, Pike Place and Seattle Center options, a free indoor stop, and practical packing advice.

For a rainy Seattle visit, choose one main attraction, lunch nearby, and an optional outdoor walk. Pike Place Market and the Aquarium suit a first-time downtown day with some outdoor connections; Seattle Center suits a museum-focused day. You don’t need to cross the city whenever the forecast changes.

Does it rain all year in Seattle?

Precipitation is possible in every month, but Seattle’s rain is strongly seasonal. At Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals show 6.31 inches of precipitation in November, compared with 0.60 inches in July. November averages about 18 days with measurable precipitation—at least 0.01 inch—while July averages about five. These are airport averages, not a forecast for your downtown visit, and a day with measurable precipitation doesn’t mean rain all day. NOAA monthly climate normals

For planning purposes:

  • Late fall and winter: Make indoor activities the core of the day, with walks added when conditions suit you.
  • Spring and early fall: Keep the outdoor plan flexible rather than booking every hour.
  • Summer: Leave room for outdoor time, but still pack a light rain layer.

Before leaving your hotel, check the National Weather Service’s Seattle forecast and advisories. Look at the timing of rain, wind and temperature—not just the rain symbol.

Choose one rain-friendly area

Venue hours and the construction note below were checked October 28, 2026. Recheck opening hours for your travel date, especially around holidays.

Pike Place Market and the waterfront: best for a first visit

Suggested order: Market browsing → lunch → Aquarium → optional waterfront walk.

Aim for late-morning Market browsing rather than assuming every shop opens at breakfast. The Market says most activity runs 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with individual business hours varying. Use its directory and map to pick a few shops and a lunch stop; treat it as a district to explore, not one fully enclosed building. Pike Place Market visitor information

Make the Seattle Aquarium your ticketed anchor if marine life interests you. Admission covers Pier 59, Pier 60 and the Ocean Pavilion. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m., with last entry at 5 p.m. Reserve an entry time online rather than relying on an outdoor walk-up queue.

The important rain catch: the Aquarium isn’t an entirely indoor outing. Pier 59 and Pier 60 connect by a breezeway, while the Ocean Pavilion is across a public plaza. The operator says visits include indoor and outdoor spaces with open airflow. Keep your jacket with you. Aquarium visit information

If conditions improve, add a waterfront walk. If they worsen, skip the extra promenade time—not the lunch break. For a fuller route, use our rainy-day neighborhood itinerary.

Seattle Center: best for a longer museum visit

Suggested order: Monorail from downtown → Museum of Pop Culture → Armory lunch → optional campus stroll.

The Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP) recommends allowing at least a few hours. Its listed regular hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The Monorail connects Westlake Center at Fifth and Pine with the Seattle Center terminal adjacent to the museum, making this a straightforward alternative to a long walk from downtown. For lunch, the Armory Food & Event Hall keeps you on campus. The building is listed as open 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, but food-business hours vary; building access isn’t a promise that every counter is serving. Seattle Center food directory

As of October 2026, the Seattle Center Monorail station is under renovation. The operator says service continues on its regular schedule during construction. Check its station project updates before riding.

Want a free indoor stop instead?

Choose the Central Library for architecture and a reading break. Its 11-floor building includes the Books Spiral and spaces to read or study. Regular hours currently start at 10 a.m. daily, closing at 8 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday and 6 p.m. on other days. Check the Central Library’s hours and visitor information before heading over.

Use it as a downtown alternative to paid admission, not another compulsory stop after a full museum day.

Pack for the gaps between indoor stops

Bring a hooded rain jacket, comfortable water-resistant shoes, a warm layer and spare socks. A compact umbrella is useful if you prefer one. Keep your phone and other essentials in a dry pouch.

On a wet day, shorten outdoor connections before adding more attractions.

A ferry can still be a deliberate outing, but don’t use it as an instant museum substitute. Choose outbound and return sailings from the Washington State Ferries schedules, check service alerts, and decide what you’ll do on arrival. Our three-part ferry-day plan helps keep that trip separate from your downtown rain plan.
